Hugs and Kisses
This girl is short for her age. She was also diagnosed with a horseshoe kidney.
Challenge: What is the most common cardiovascular anomaly in patients with this disease?
This is Turner syndrome due to loss of all or part of an X-chromosome (45X or 45X/46XX mosaicism). Patients with Turner syndrome are short and stocky with a squarely shaped "shield" chest. Neonates may have lymphedema of the extremities, webbed neck, nail dysplasia, high palate, and short fourth metacarpal. There is an association with hearing loss, hypothyroidism, renal abnormalities, hypertension, ocular abnormalities, and abnormal liver function tests. Most have primary amenorrhea (gonadal dysgenesis). Coarctation of the aorta and aortic valve disease are common with a risk of aortic dissection or rupture.
