Wrong Place, Wrong Time



Both of these can be diagnosed with fetal ultrasound and materal serum AFP. Obstetrics, pediatrics, and surgery all play key roles in diagnosis and management.

Challenge: What congenital anomalies are seen here? (They are two distinct entities)

    first is omphalocele (bad baby, good guts), and second is gastroschisis (good baby, bad guts).

    The first image shows omphalocele, a defect in the anterior abdominal wall through which intraabdominal contents extrude into the base of the umbilical cord. An aminoperitoneal membrane covers the organs (usually small bowel, occasionally large bowel and liver). The second image shows gastroschisis, a full-thickness paraumbilical abdominal wall defect associated with evisceration of fetal intestine.
