This is a cauliflower ear (hematoma auris or perichondrial hematoma), often caused by trauma to the external ear, seen in amateur wrestlers, rugby players, and martial artists. Trauma to the ear can separate cartilage from the overlying perichondrium leading to necrosis and fibrosis; it also predisposes to infection.
