This is a sunburn, manifesting as painful erythema in areas with excessive sun exposure. It is a risk factor in particular for basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Squamous cell cancers arise with higher cumulative UV light exposure and age, but not necessarily intense intermittent sun exposures.
